Harpenden skinfold calipers measure the thickness of a fold of skin and the fat beneath it, and those readings are used to estimate body fat. The design dates from 1958, when it was developed with D. J. M. Tanner, a leading figure in skinfold measurement, and the calipers have been used on research projects around the world for more than 40 years.
The jaws close with the same pressure across the whole measuring range, so a thin fold and a thick fold are measured under the same force. That consistency is what makes repeat measurements comparable, whether you are tracking one client over months or testing a whole squad. Readings come off a dial, over a range of 0 to 80mm.
