This grip strength tester is an electronic hand dynamometer that measures the maximum force you can squeeze with one hand. Strength athletes, climbers, throwers, physios and people working through rehab use it to get a number they can compare week to week, so they know whether their grip is actually changing.
What it reads
It records isometric grip force up to 90kg in 0.1kg steps, in kilograms or pounds, on an LCD screen. After each squeeze the screen rates your result against norms for your age and gender, and the manual includes a norms table if you want to check it on paper. The handle adjusts, so small and large hands can both get a proper grip.
Running a grip test
- Adjust the handle to fit your hand and choose your user profile.
- Stand with your arm by your side and squeeze as hard as you can for a few seconds.
- Rest, repeat two or three times on each hand, and record your highest reading.
The unit stores results for up to 19 users, which makes it handy for a coach testing a group or a household sharing one tester, and you can recall earlier readings quickly. Testing at the same time of day with the same handle setting makes the numbers easier to compare over a training block.
In the box
The dynamometer and an instruction booklet in English. It runs on 2 x AAA batteries.
For the difference between testing grip and training it, read our guide to grip strength exercises. More testers are in Hand Dynamometers, and if you want something to train your grip with, see Grip Strengtheners.
