BMI calculator

Body mass index, or BMI, is a number worked out from your height and weight. To get it, divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared, which is your height in metres multiplied by itself. Enter your height and weight in metric units below and the calculator does the maths for you.

What the result means

These are the standard BMI ranges for adults:

BMICategory
Under 18.5Underweight
18.5 to 24.9Healthy weight
25 to 29.9Overweight
30 and overObese

BMI is a screening number for adults. It doesn’t measure body fat, and it doesn’t tell you about your health on its own. Someone with a lot of muscle, for example, can have a high BMI. Use your result as one number among many, and talk to a health professional such as your GP if you’d like advice about it.

A BMI wheel for quick checks

If you’d like to work out BMI without a phone or computer, for example in a gym or a group class, the BMI Calculator Wheel costs $15.00. You line up height against weight on the wheel and read the BMI off it.
